Life Sciences Technology Specialist

A life sciences technology specialist at L&A uses their scientific training to work closely with attorneys to craft legal strategies to protect biotechnology inventions. In particular, technology specialists interact with clients and inventors, learn to draft patent applications, and gain experience in patent prosecution.  Technology specialists have the opportunity to work as part of a team performing freedom to operate searches, opinion work, due diligence projects, and general intellectual property counseling.  Some technology specialists choose take the patent bar to become patent agents, and attend law school to become patent attorneys.

L&A is a Boston-based, nationally recognized law firm.  We focus on intellectual property law in a variety of technical areas.  We assist our biotechnology clients in protecting their innovations in areas such as cell therapies, gene editing technologies, and antibody therapeutics.

The ideal candidate will have:

Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or a related field. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Use Ph.D. training to analyze data and experimental writeups to understand new inventions; interview inventors;

  • Search literature and patent databases to identify and analyze key publications;

  • Write patent applications;

  • Develop arguments for patentability and prepare responses to communications from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office;

  • Interact with lawyers in different countries to help coordinate a worldwide patent strategy;

  • Review patents as part of the IP due diligence for a potential acquisition or merger.
